The National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ) is dedicated to the recognition and professional advancement of Hispanics in the news industry. Established in April 1984, NAHJ created a national voice and unified vision for all Hispanic journalists. NAHJ is governed by a 16-member board of directors that consists of executive officers and regional directors who represent geographic areas of the United States and the Caribbean. The National Association of Hispanic Journalists awards are open to any U.S. Hispanic photojournalists in either English-language or Spanish-language media. The organization is a non-profit, educational group that promotes the professional development and recognition for Hispanics in the news media.

National Council of La Raza

The National Council of La Raza created the Ruben Salazar Award, named in honor of The Los Angeles Times journalist killed in 1970 by a police tear gas projectile while he was covering a Chicano march in East Los Angeles. The Ruben Salazar Award is given each year to an individual who has dedicated his or her life to promoting a positive portrayal of Latino historical, political, economic and cultural contributions to United States' society. LAMP features people who have received that award for excellence in journalism. NLCR has also sponsored the American Latino Media Arts (ALMA) awards to recognize the positive portrayal of Latinos images in the film and TV industries of the United States.

Pulitzer Prize

Pulitzer Prizes are annual awards for achievements in American journalism, letters, drama and music. The prizes have been awarded by Columbia University since 1917, on the recommendation of a Pulitzer Prize Board. Fourteen prizes are given in journalism. The prizes in letters are for fiction, history, poetry, biography or autobiography, and general nonfiction. There are also prizes for drama and music. A gold medal is awarded for public service in journalism while the other categories are accompanied by a $5,000 award paid from Pulitzer endowments.

Sigma Delta Chi

The Sigma Delta Chi Awards competition began in 1932 as the Distinguished Service Awards, which honored professional journalists for outstanding meritorious service in the field. Starting in 1939, the scope of the awards was expanded to include excellence in editorial content. Today the Sigma Delta Chi Awards are one of the most highly esteemed award competitions in the profession, largely because all of the entrants in the contest are judged by panels of their peers. To date, the Society of Professional Journalists has awarded more than 1000 medallions to the winners of these prestigious awards.
